Truck Lane Pilot Study

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Truck Lane Pilot Study was a pilot program to determine and compare the impacts and effectiveness of restricting trucks to operating only in certain lanes in the study corridor.

After collecting, analyzing, and comparing various data including traffic volumes, truck volumes, crash rates, compliance rates, and other data, the restrictions were determined to be successful.  There were improvements in mobility, safety, and air quality within the study corridors after the restrictions were put into place.   A comprehensive final report on the Truck Lane Restrictions was completed in October 2006.  This report includes recommendations that the lane restrictionsbe expanded into a regional system.
